Thanks Eric!
After seven months I can honestly say "we love our LEAFs."
Along the lines of ground-level ozone, Christof at SolarChargedDriving.com recently made an excellent post that I am going to quote from:

<blockquote>Whose fumes would you rather be sucking?
Yes, the EV’s batteries may have been charged with electricity produced by coal. But that’s nonetheless a different type of air pollution, as the emissions from a coal plant smokestack are streamed high into the sky while auto emissions are puffed directly into our faces and lungs.
</blockquote>

Just FYI:
Aaron on the Smart Car forum has some really neat internal photos of the GE WattStation, links to the GE Industrial EV Charger (the DuraStation) and links to GE Videos.

The "home" (residential) version of the WattStation uses the same control board as the GE Industrial chargers. Who would have guessed that we have built-in Ethernet and Serial connections right inside the case.
Thanks to Aaron for sharing this work!
See his photos and posts at: http://forum.smartcar451.com/forum16/730.html

Hi Christina,

Yes, I agree that if you take a holistic look at the cost of an EV the savings goes way beyond just what is saved by not buying gasoline. Oil changes are not the only thing, air filters, belts, hoses transmission filters, transmission oil, the list is really VERY long as to what you DON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH.

One of my <a href="http://www.nissanusa.com/leaf-electric-car/index#/leaf-electric-car/video/all/LEAF_advertising/the_new_maintenance" title="The New Maintenance" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">favourite Nissan commercials for the LEAF has all the parts that you "DON'T HAVE"</a> laid out (click to view).

Best Regards,
Ken Clifton

Ken Congrats on the second purchase from Ben Mynatt Nissan! Quick question for you I noticed you had placed an est cost savings for fuel how much would you say you have saved on oil changes as well?? Seeing how the leaf doesnt have oil base it on the average oil chage life of 3000 miles @ 29.99 for oil change service.

Hi Chris,
Yes, it is absolutely possible, in fact we charge via solar almost every day. With Grid-tied solar, you can offset the power used to charge the car, even if you are not home during the day. We do net-metering so the power company functions as a big battery. The solar energy that is produced goes back out to the grid, running the meter backwards during the day if the car is not connected. At night the car pulls that energy back from the grid.
I will send you an email with detail.

Best Regards,
Ken Clifton

ken, I am looking at buying a leaf and would be more interested if I can truly use solar power to charge it. What is needed to accomplish that ? thanks, Chris
Ps trying to work my schedule to get to one of your seminars
